We have long understood that culture is not merely a mirror held up to the world — it is the architect of worlds yet to come. Literature builds bridges between divided shores. Sustainability, Community and Change

The Asian Literary Festival is unique in one critical respect: we refuse to treat sustainability as a footnote.

Where most cultural institutions speak in the language of aspiration, ALF is built on a robust, integrated strategy that aligns every programme strand with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We do not wear the SDGs as a badge — we embed them into how we curate, whom we invite, how we engage communities, and how we measure impact. Literature, for us, is not an end in itself. It is a vehicle for genuine human development.

Our Community Mobilisation Work

Our community mobilisation work begins long before a festival opens and continues long after it closes. We invest in local ecosystems — in schools, libraries, creative neighbourhoods and civic spaces — because we believe that the most lasting transformation happens not on stage, but in the conversations that stages make possible. Behaviour change, at scale, requires sustained engagement. ALF is designed for exactly that.

This is why we invest in human capital rather than spectacle. Every edition of ALF is an act of cultural infrastructure — building capacity in local literary communities, creating platforms for underrepresented voices, and generating economic and social value that stays in the places we visit.

Born in Sri Lanka. Present Across the World.

ALF is the only literary festival born in Sri Lanka with a sustained international presence across more than ten territories — from South and Southeast Asia to Europe and Africa, with new ground broken each year. We did not grow by replicating a template. We grew by listening to each place we entered and building something rooted in its specific soil.

We are also, by design, financially independent. ALF does not operate on a model dependent on foundation grants or philanthropic goodwill. We are built on earned partnerships, earned audiences and earned trust — a cultural enterprise that sustains itself through the value it creates. This is not incidental to our mission. It is the mission. A festival that cannot stand on its own feet cannot stand for anyone else.
